I sat on a log by the fire in the lower pasture, my hands cupped around a mug of hot chocolate. I looked towards Joe who was playing football with my brothers, and his friends. I smiled as Joe fell into the snow holding on to the football, with Lucas and Jonah on top of him. I took a sip of my cocoa, looking over the brim of my cup at the pile of boys. I heard Joe's familiar laugh as he shoved the other two boys off of him, they all three stood, brushed the snow off of themselves, and resumed playing. I watched them fight over the ball while I drank my beverage. I looked into the fire, warm and blazing infront of me.
"Is the fire that interesting?" I jumped at the noise.
"Oh, you scared me." I looked over at Joe, who had sat down beside of me.
"Sorry, love." Joe apologized with a laugh. He slipped his arm around my waist, and planted a small kiss on my lips. "Did you put caramel in your drink?" He asked.
"No, why?" I looked down at my hot chocolate, then back up at Joe.
"Because you still taste like it." Joe replied, before pressing his lips against mine again.
"I'm sorry." I set my cup down on the ground.
"No, don't apologize. I don't mind, at all." Joe told me, his smile showing the dimple in his right cheek.
"I didn't think so." I smiled back at him. "Is the game over?" I asked him looking towards where the football game had been going on.
"We decided to take a break, and warm up." Joe pulled me closer to him, his smile stretching farther up his face.
"Easy, Joe, we are only taking a break. We're not quitting the game." Lucas spoke teasingly to Joe. He sat on the other side of the fire with Jonah.
"Shut up. You wouldn't be saying anything if Josey were here." Joe retorded, making a face at his friend.
I giggled. "Joseph." I whispered his name, I waited for him to look down at me, before kissing him on the mouth.
"OK, that's good enough. Let's go lover boy." Lucas, who had walked over to where we sat, pulled at Joe's coat.
Joe squeezed my hand before standing and following his friends.
"Dude, cool it." Lucas shoved at Joe's shoulder as they walked to the field. "You have a few more months before you marry that beauty, don't go too far now."
"I'm not planning on it." Joe told him. "But sometimes it's hard." He added.
"I can tell." Lucas shook his head. "Now catch." He held up the football he had in his hand......

“Kandie." Joe grabbed onto my arm to stop me. "Go upstairs, and go to sleep." He told me.
"No, I'm fine." I shook my head at him.
"No, you're not. You're exhausted, Kath, go take a nap." Joe cupped his hands around my face, so I would look at him. "Please, love, you look like you're about to collapse." He told me.
"Joe-" I tried to speak but he cut me off.
"Go, Katherine. Now." Joe looked at me, (determination) mixed with a plea was in his eyes.
I sighed. "All right." I gave into him.
"Good girl." Joe smiled at me, leaned forward, and planted a kiss on my forehead. "You still look gorgeous, by the way."
I gave him a tired smile. "Thank you." I turned, walked up to my bedroom, and was a sleep on my bed a few minutes later.
**********************

I sat down on the living room couch, and sighed while running my fingers through my hair.
"What are you sighing about?" My mother, who sat in a chair reading, asked me looking up from her book.
"Kandie. She's stubborn." I looked up at my mom. "She'll keep going and going until she's about to collapse." I shook my head, a smile spreading up my face.
"And you're crazy about her, Joe." Mom smiled back at me. "You always have been." She closed the book she had been reading. "Before we left for England we were visiting her family, and you stayed with her, Sarah, and Jane as Daniel, and (David) were swinging them around. You weren't worried about Sarah or your sister getting hurt. You were watching Kandie." She smiled sweetly at me. "I don't understand it, just like you don't, how two people can love eachother for so long, and still be together. I just know that my son has been in love with the same little girl ever since he was eight-years old, and has never stopped loving her. He only continues to protect, watch, and take care of her." She sat back comfortably in her chair.
"And I will continue to do that, until the day I die, or Christ comes." I told her, and I ment it. "I don't want her to hurt herself by tiring herself." I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees. "She's always focused on others, and never on herself." I clasped my hands together, Kandie's love for others was one of the many things I loved about her. It was almost a weakness of hers. She would get so focused about taking care of others that she often forgot about taking care of herself.
Mom stood up from her chair, and stepped over to me. "Which is why you are perfect for her, Joseph?" She placed her hands on either side of my neck. "You take care of her, while she takes care of others." She straightened back up and left the room.
I looked after my mom, she never called me Joseph. Only Kandie ever called me by my full first name. She must've gotten into her reading. I shrugged, stood, and followed her. I made my way up to the bedroom I shared with Kandie, opening the door slowly so as not to wake her. My wife lay asleep on her back on our bed, one hand resting on her stomach, the other by her head on her pillow. I lie down next to her, and closed my eyes. I lie there a few minutes, listening to Kandie breathing in her sleep. I opened my eyes back, when I felt her touch me, I smiled when I realized she was still asleep, and just as usual was just feeling me next to her. I slipped one arm around my petite wife, and closed my eyes again.

*****************************************
I felt Joe lying next to me, as I began to wake out of my slumber. I slipped my arm from around his waist, as I opened my eyes. I sat up, pushing my hair back out of my face.
“Hey, baby.” Joe whispered.
“Hey.” I looked down at him, his smiled stretched across his face.
“Did you sleep well?” Joe rubbed his hand up and down my back.
I nodded. “Mm-hmm.” I smiled sleepily at him. “I needed it.” I tilted my head to one side.
“Are you glad I made you come up here?” Joe reached up and touched my face. “You’re pretty.” He sounded like a little boy, it was so cute.
I laughed. “Thank you.” I leaned down and kissed him. “You don’t look so bad yourself.” I tapped my finger against his lips.

Memories

Memory is the ability to retain knowledge: the ability of the mind or of a person or organism to retain learned information and knowledge of past events and experiences and to retrieve that information and knowledge.

My memory is one thing that is very ,shall we say, strong I can remember things from years ago, that other people have forgotten, sometimes soon after they happened.  Memories are things that don’t keep us alive but they sometimes help us to smile when we’re having a bad day, or in some cases come back in the worst timing ever! The things you want to forget are often things you remember the most, and those precious moments you always want to remember, you often “forget”. Of course, nothing is really ever forgotten, it is simply placed in the far places of your mind that only certain phrases, happenings, or even smells, or sights can bring back. Or not thought about for a while.

The memories that have come back to me recently are of a certain guy that was in my life….and if you are reading this and you know me well, you probably know who I’m talking about. And if you don’t know me, or can’t think of who I am talking about…Jaden. “Cheerios” was my ‘food’ nickname that I had for him, simply because of a conversation we had. One of these ‘forgotten’ memories that returned to me about him was the voicemail he had…to me. It wasn’t a voicemail he left me, it was his voicemail to me. Whoever called him and he didn’t answer heard it, including one of his ex-girlfriends. The message said, and I still hear his voice saying it: “Hey, Candi, I just wanted to let you know I love you and, yeah, leave a message if you want ‘kay, bye.”

……………to be continued…….
